10.4 Solutions and Solubility Flashcards
What is a solution?
a homogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in solvent
What is dissolution?
the process of dissolving
What is a solute?
the substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution
What is solvation?
process that occurs when the solvent molecules surround the solute molecules
What is an alloy?
solution containing two solids
What are electrolytes?
free ions in a solution
What is a strong electrolyte?
salts that completely dissociate in the solvent
What are weak electrolytes?
salts that remain ion-paired to some extent in the solvent
What are nonelectrolytes?
covalent compounds that do not dissociate in solvent
What is the van Hoff factor?
i = tells us how many ions of one unit of a substance will produce in a solution
What is solubility?
amount of solute that will saturate a particular solvent
What are the three phase solubility rules?
- solubility of solids in liquids increases with increasing temperature
- solubility of gases in liquids tends to decrease with increasing temperature
- solubility of gases in liquids tends to increase with increasing pressure
What are the three salt solubility rules?
- all group 1 and ammonium salts are soluble
- all nitrate, perchlorate, and acetate salts are soluble
- all silver, lead, and mercury salts are insoluble except for their nitrates, perchlorates, and acetates
What is the solubility product constant?
Ksp = the extent to which a salt will dissolve in water
What is molar solubility?
number of moles of that salt that will saturate a liter of water
