104 Flashcards
What is ATS Surveillance?
All methods of remotely sensing aircraft using certified/commissioned electronic equipment including PSR, SSR, MLAT, ADS-B, without the benefit of visual observation.
Define ALT (Altitude).
The vertical distance of a level, a point or an object considered as a point, measured from mean sea level. Also called: indicated altitude.
What is TRACK in aviation terms?
The projection on the earth’s surface of the path of an aircraft, expressed in degrees from true, magnetic, or grid north.
What is CONTROLLED AIRSPACE?
An airspace of defined dimensions within which ATC service is provided.
What does READBACK refer to?
A procedure whereby the receiving station repeats a received message or an appropriate part thereof to the transmitting station for confirmation.
What is an AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL CLEARANCE?
An authorization issued by an ATC unit for an aircraft to proceed within controlled airspace in accordance with specified conditions.
Define AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL INSTRUCTION.
A directive issued by an air traffic control unit for air traffic control purposes.
What is INDICATED AIRSPEED?
The uncorrected reading on the airspeed indicator.
What is Ground Speed (GS)?
The speed of the aircraft over the surface of the earth.
What are the requirements for applying ATS surveillance control procedures?
- The aircraft is identified
- The aircraft is in controlled airspace
- Direct communication with the pilot is established
Fill in the blank: An IFR aircraft that departs an uncontrolled airport should squawk _______ depending on requested altitude.
1000 (or 2000)
List two advantages of ADS-B.
- Flexible installation in remote areas
- Highly accurate (updates twice per second)
List two disadvantages of ADS-B.
- Requires Mode S transponder, not universally available
- Ground-based range limited to 180 NM
What does VMI stand for?
Vertical Movement Indicator.
What does the Vertical Movement Indicator (VMI) show?
An aircraft’s climb or descent with an arrow next to its altitude, based on its vertical speed.
What should be displayed on the situation display?
- Unlinked targets
- CJSs
- Coast list in full format
- Altitude readouts (mode C)
- Current weather data and history
- VMI
- Appropriate geographic map
What does the term ‘ACKNOWLEDGE’ mean?
Let me know that you have received and understood this message.
Fill in the blank: An aircraft is deemed to be maintaining a validated altitude when it is within _______ of the assigned altitude.
200ft
What is the IFR Clearance Format order?
- Prefix/aircraft ID
- Clearance limit
- SID
- Route
- Altitude
- Speed
- Departure, enroute, approach, or holding instructions
- Special instructions or information
- Traffic information
True or False: An aircraft is considered to have reached an altitude when its altitude has been within 200 ft of the assigned altitude for four consecutive readout updates.
True
What should be prioritized when assigning altitudes?
- Aircraft carrying a sick or seriously injured person
- Aircraft already at the requested altitude
- Leading aircraft when multiple are at the same altitude
What is Transition speed?
The speed at which a pilot makes the transition between indicated airspeed and Mach number when climbing or descending.
How do you express a speed adjustment?
As a multiple of 10 knots, based on IAS.
What is the general rule for adding speed to indicated airspeed (IAS)?
Add 2% of the IAS per 1000 feet of altitude.
