10.2 Salivary Gland Flashcards
Exocrine glands that secrete saliva
Salivary glands
Major salivary glands (3)
parotid, submandibular, sublingual
hundreds of microscopic glands distributed throughout oral mucosa
minor salivary glands
4 manifestations of mumps
- bilateral inflamed parotid glands
- orchitis (risk of sterility, esp in teens)
- pancreatitis
- aseptic meningitis
serum amylase is increased in mumps due to
EITHER salivary gland or pancreatic involvement
inflammation of the salivary gland; most commonly due to an obstructing stone –> S aureus infxn; usu. unilateral
sialadenitis
benign tumor composed of stromal (e.g. cartilage) and epithelial tissue; most common tumor of the salivary gland
pleomorphic adenoma
usually arises in parotid; presents as a mobile, painless, circumscribed mass at the angle of the jaw
pleomorphic adenoma
why is there a high rate of recurrence of pleomorphic adenoma?
extension of small islands of tumor through tumor capsule often leads to incomplete resection
pleomorphic adenoma rarely transforms to carcinoma, which presents with signs of
facial nerve damage
benign cystic tumor with abundant lymphocytes and germinal centers (lymph node-like stroma); 2nd most common tumor of the salivary gland; almost always arises in the parotid
warthin tumor
most common malignant tumor of the salivary gland; composed of mucinous and squamous cells; usu. arises in parotid gland & involves facial nerve
mucoepidermoid carcinoma
