10.2 Diversity within a community Flashcards
Definition of biodiversity
What are its 3 components
Number and variety of living organisms in a particular area
Made up of…
- Species diversity
- Genetic diversity
- Ecosystem diversity
What is species diversity
Refers to number of different species and number of individuals of each species within a community
What is genetic diversity
variety of genes possessed by the individuals that make up a population of a species
What is ecosystem diversity
Range of different habitats, eg from a small local habitat to the whole earth
What is species richness
The number of different species in a particular area at a given time.
It doesn’t take into account the number of individuals in each species however
What is the equation for measuring species diversity
The higher the value of d, the more diverse the species is
d = N(N-1) / ∑n(n-1)
So N is total number of organisms of all species
And n is total number of organisms of each species
∑ is the sum of members of individual species
what is the difference between species richness and the diversity index
The diversity index takes into account the numbers of individuals in each species, whilst species richness only takes into account the number of different species in the area
What is a community
All the different species that live in an area and interact with eachother
