10.2 Flashcards
What is a species?
A group of organisms that are able to breed with each other to produce fertile offspring.
What is biodiversity?
The number and variety of living organisms
What is genetic diversity?
The variety of genes possessed by individuals that make up one species
What is species diversity?
The number of species and the number of individuals of each species within a community
What is ecosystem diversity?
The range of different habitats within a particular area
What is species richness?
The number of different species in a given area
What is species evenness?
The proportion of the community that is made up of an individual species.
How can species richness be measured and what is the formula?
- Using the diversity index formula:
d= N(N-1)/Sum of n(n-1) - d: species diversity index
-N: Total number of organisms of all species -n: Total number of organisms of each species
The higher the D value is, the greater the species diversity.
Why is measuring Biodiversity important?
- Allows comparisons to be made between different areas
- Allows comparisons to be made in the same area but at different times.
