10.1 lymphatic system Flashcards

1
Q

what does the lymphatic system do?

A
  1. returns fluids and proteins that leak out of the blood vessels back to the circulatory system
  2. produces lymphocytes (wbc), transports them around the body and provides them a place to mature

Q

what is lymph and lymphocytes?

Q

what are MHC markers?

A

class I:
1. found on the surface of all nucleated cells
2. present self-antigen
3. MHC I act as markers for self
4. all nucleated cells in the same organism carry the same ‘self’ class I MHC
class II:
1. found on the surface of some immune cells, such as macrophages.

Q

what are antigens?

A
  1. triggers an immune response
  2. molecules attached to the surface of pathogens/ cell fragments/ toxins produced by pathogens that circulate in the bodily fluids.
  3. lymphocytes respond to antigens
