10.1 lymphatic system Flashcards
1
Q
what does the lymphatic system do?
A
- returns fluids and proteins that leak out of the blood vessels back to the circulatory system
- produces lymphocytes (wbc), transports them around the body and provides them a place to mature
2
Q
what is lymph and lymphocytes?
A
lymph :contains fats, proteins and white blood cells including phagocytes and lymphocytes. movement of muscles pushes lymph along the lymph vessels
lymphocytes: group of wbc. the bone marrow is the site of lymphocyte production, some lymphocytes move to the thymus to mature.
3
Q
what are MHC markers?
A
class I:
1. found on the surface of all nucleated cells
2. present self-antigen
3. MHC I act as markers for self
4. all nucleated cells in the same organism carry the same ‘self’ class I MHC
class II:
1. found on the surface of some immune cells, such as macrophages.
4
Q
what are antigens?
A
- triggers an immune response
- molecules attached to the surface of pathogens/ cell fragments/ toxins produced by pathogens that circulate in the bodily fluids.
- lymphocytes respond to antigens
