101 - First Aid Flashcards
What are the 5 steps of ORM?
Identifying Hazards Assessing Hazards Making Risk Decisions Implementing Controls Supervising
What is ORM?
The process of evaluating and assessing risk inherent with military operations, ensuring risks are to the lowest level possible.
What is the governing instruction of safety and mishap reporting?
OPNAVINST 5102.1
Navy and Marine Corps Mishap and Safety Investigation, Reporting and Recording Keeping Manual.
What is Hazard Severity?
An assessment of the potential consequence that can occur as a result of a hazard.
What are the 4 categories of hazard severity?
- Loss of the ability to accomplish a mission
- Significantly degraded mission capability or unit readiness
- Degraded mission capability or unit readiness
- Little or no adverse impact on mission capability or unit readiness
What is mishap probability?
An assessment of the likelihood that a potential consequence may occur as a result of a hazard.
What are the 4 subcategories of mishap probability?
- Likely to occur, immediately or within a short period of time
- probably will occur in time
- may occur in time
- unlikely to occur, but not impossible
Define RAC
Risk Assessment Codes- based off values determined from hazard severity and mishap probability
What are the 5 RAC’s
- Critical
- Serious
- Moderate
- Minor
- Negligible
Name the 4 required mishap reportable items
- military fatalities and injuries occurring during PCS orders
- mishaps occurring to personnel assigned to unified or task force commands
- mishaps associated with secondary side of naval nuclear propulsion plant or non nuclear components
- work related illness or injury that involves medical treatment beyond first aid
State the 3 objectives of first aid
- Save life
- Prevent further injury
- Prevent infection
State the 3 methods of controlling bleeding
- Direct pressure
- Pressure points
- Tourniquet
Identify 11 pressure points
-Superficial temporal artery - temple
-Facial artery- Jaw
-Subclavian artery- collar bone
-Common carotid artery-neck
-Brachial artery(2) inner upper arm; inner elbow
-Radial/ulnar artery- wrist
-Femoral artery- upper thigh
-lilac artery- groin
-popliteal artery- knee
Anterior/posterior tibial artery- ankle
What is shock and its symptoms?
A disruption of the circulatory system
Symptoms- lackluster eyes, shallow breathing, cold pale skin, weak or absent pulse
What is the treatment for shock?
Laying the victim down with feet elevated 6-12 inches. Cover them to maintain body heat, reassure and calm victim if conscious
What is the difference between an open and closed fracture?
Open- there is an open wound in the tissue or skin. Bone may not be protruding through the skin
Closed- bone is broken but no break in the skin
Describe the necessary procedures for electrical shock
Do not touch the victims body, wire, or any other object that may be conducting electricity.
- look for the switch first, and turn off the current immediately
- try to remove the wire from the victim with a dry broom , handle, branch
What is the treatment for electrical shock?
Administer artificial ventilation after freeing person from the wire
Check pulse, if no pulse start CPR immediately and get professional medical assistance
What is hypothermia?
A general cooking of the whole body.
What are the symptoms of hypothermia? And the treatment?
-appear pale, unconscious, pulse faint
Treatment- wrap in warm blankets in a warm room, no hot drinks or other stimulants until the victim has regained consciousness and get medical attention asap
What are the two different frostbite
Superficial frostbite- ice crystals forming in the upper skin layers
Deep frostbite- ice crystals forming in the deeper tissues
Define the effects and treatment on heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Hear exhaustion - excessive sweating,
Heat stroke-when body is unable to control temp, dry skin, hallucinations
HERP
HERO
HERF
Hazards of electromagnetic radiation to Ordnance, personnel, fuels
Define HAZMAT?
Hazard materials that pose substantial hazard to human health or the environment
What are the different hazard materials?
Flammable Poison Corrosive Oxidizers Marine pollutants
What is MSDS?
Material Safety Data Sheet - a form with data regarding properties of a particular substance
What is PPE and all the gear?
Personal Protective Equipment Respirators Hand protection Foot protection Eye protection Face protection Skin/body protection Hearing protection
