10.1 Community Study Flashcards
What is a community
All the organisms that live together in a place
What is community ecology
The study of interactions among all populations living in an environment
What is a niche
Biotic and abiotic resources that a species uses
What are the different types of interactions
Competition
Mutualism
Commensalism
Predation/Herbivory/Parasitism
What is endosymbiosis, symbiosis, and non-symbiosis
Endosymbiosis: One or more species living inside another species
Symbiosis: Two or more species share a close physical interaction
Non-symbiosis: Interaction of organisms that live apart of each other
What is the difference between a fundamental niche and a realized niche
A fundamental niche is the potential space that certain species can occupy whereas a realized niche is the amount of space a particular niche actually takes up.
What is the difference between facultative mutualism and obligatory mutualism
Facultative mutualism occurs when two organisms interact and recieve benefits from each other but can survive without each other. Obligatory mutualism occurs when two organisms depend on each other.
