101-13 High Altitude Weather Flashcards
Pressure levels ______ in the South due to ______ temps
Pressure levels ______ in the North due to ______ temps
Increase - warm
Decrease - cold
*PFG will push air from S to N
Jet Stream & the 2 types
A narrow band of winds with a wind speed of 50kts or greater
In or near tropopause; polar side
Polar Jet Stream and Subtropical
Polar Jet Stream
The core is ~30000 ft
Winter = goes south, wind speeds increase, altitude increases (25 N lat)
Summer = goes north, wind speed decreases, altitude decreases (45 N lat)
Subtropical Jet Stream
Core ~35-45000 ft (avg. 39000)
Most active during winter, dissipates to almost nothing in summer (25 N Lat)
3 wave crests: Asia, North Am., Near East
Size of jet streams
L - 1000s miles
W - 100s miles
D 1000s feet
Clear Air Turbulence
-unexpected/no visual cues
-CAT mixed w/ Jet Stream TROP and upper fronts
- Upwind of base of TROF
- Along TROF centerline
-Convergence of 2 jet streams: Polar will shift under subtropical
Descend if Temp is Decreases
Ascend if temp is rising
