10.0 Biodiversity Flashcards
What are the rules of the binomial naming system?
First name is the genus and is capitalised. Second
name is species and has no capital. If handritten
it should be underlined if typed then in italics
What is the purpose of courtship?
Recognise members of the same species. Identify
a mate that is capable of breeding. Form a pair
bond. Synchronise mating and actually become
able to breed
What are the three domains?
Archaea, bacteria and eukarya
What are the features of the bacteria domain?
No histones, no membrane bound organelles, 70s
ribosomes, cells walls are made of murein
(peptidoglycan).
What are the features of the archaea domain?
Genes and protein synthesis more like eukaryotes.
Membranes contain fatty acids joined to glycerol
by ester linkages. If they have a cell wall it
doesn’t contain murein
What are the features of the eukarya domain?
Contain membrane bound organelles. Membranes
contain fatty acids joined to glycerol by ester
linkages. If they have a cell wall it doesn’t
contain murein. 80s ribosomes. Histones.
What is species richness?
Number of different species in a particular area at
a given time
What do you need to calculate an index of diversity?
The total number of organisms of all species and
the total numbe rof organisms of each species.
What is species diversity?
Number of different species and the number of
each individuals of each species within any one
community
Give examples of how agriculture reduces species diversity
Monoculture.
Removal of hedgerows.
Over
grazing of land.
Use of pesticides.
Absence of crop rotation and intercropping
What steps can farmers take to conserve species diversity?
Plant hedges instead of fences.
Maintain existing ponds.
Reduce use of pesticides
What are the three ways of measuring genetic diversity?
Compare DNA sequences, RNA sequences and
amino acid sequence
How can sampling bias be prevented?
Random sampling
How can the effect of chance when sampling be reduced?
Large sample size
What does the standard deviation tell you?
Indicates the range of values either side of the
mean
