Ever reader contributes to the reading of a text, either consciously or unconscoudly
When you read a passage in the bible, you interpret it a certain way. Depending on how our brains/hearts think, or what is currently happening in our lives.
The bible is the creation of the church
The Church, in about the first century after the pentecost, created the Bible by finding a bunch of books that they felt fit, and putting it into one big book.
The Bible is the critic of the church
Scripture is used to address faults in the church’s doings. (Prophets for example) So when we are reading the bible we will not always be right
The Bible is historically situated and culturally rooted
When reading the Bible, there are some things that were very normal during that time and culture, but are not that normal now.
Every text has context
Every text is placed in a certain situation. If we just take it away from that, then it can lose its true meaning.
The Bible has a plurality of viewpoints
When we read the bible, we come across a variety of different viewpoints. For example, Deuteronomy 28 says that we will be blessed if we follow God, but in Jobe, His entire family died for that reason.
Read the Bible Christocentrically
Not all things in the Bible are equally important. Remember that jesus is the the clearest revelation of all
The bible is inspired by God
God guided the writing of the Bible, but he did not create it. Humans did
The Bible is best interpreted by community
We are tested by the believing community, both in large and small groups. The bible says that scripture is best examined in groups
