10 Surface Debelopments Or Nets Flashcards
Surface developments
A 2d version of an item that will eventually be assembled into an3D object
Die cutting
An industrial process used to produce large quantities of the same surface development. Used for irregular shapes and is an expensive option. I is used when numbers are needed of the irregular shapes
Tesselation
The arrangement of a surface development that reduces waste to an absolute minimum
What does fast food packaging like a McDonald’s happy meal box have at the bottom?
A crash bottom. This is due to them being able to be delivered flat (so more can be at a time) and then from there it can easily be constructed
Manipulation
Reducing or enlarging a design. Can be done to shrink or enlarge an image whilst keeping its dimensions relative
Mirroring
Selecting an axis on which to produce a mirror of a line shape a design of a picture. Can save time in the long run
What is CAD?
Computer-aided design. Is about using computers to assist you during the design process. You can:
- Produce on a variety of different materials
- Rotate the design through 360 degrees on an axis
- Design can be manipulated + mirrored easily ( with a click of the mouse)
- Any area of a design can be viewed at a range of magnifications
What is CAM?
Computer-aided manufacture. It’s about the manufacturing process related to a computer system. Many advantages. E.g) ensures each product produced is exactly the same as the prev
How can CAD and CAM be linked?
By converting the numerical data of a design into machine data that can be used to drive h machine. These sera if data are known as G and M codes usually. Most systems will offer a simulation of the cutter path, so that you can ensure it is as expected
