Destination within 10 minute walk of home/work.
Walkability is made possible via:
- Narrow, low-speed streets
- Sidewalks/pathways
-gathering spaces
Connectivity
How well each place transitions into the next
This is made possible by:
- Interconnect grid of traffic that disperses traffic and eases walking
- Hierarchy of circulation via boulevards, alleyways, and interconnected sidewalks
Mixed Uses & People
Variety of uses in communities made by two components:
1.) Mixed use is shops, offices, residences, and civic buildings.
and
2.) Diversity of people - spectrum of age groups, cultures, and incomes
Mixed Housing
Different housing types, sizes, prices, etc.
Range in type: Single family, multi-family, apartments, lofts, etc.
Quality of design
How the design engages the community and makes them feel
E.G., Human-scale architecture
Traditional Neighborhood Structure
Discernable neighborhood center & edge w/ public space at center
Increased Density
Clustered, mixed use areas that are:
- Walkable (which makes them healthier)
- Efficient
- Convenient
Smart Transportation
Adjusting streets and transportation to be healthier/safer by introducing different transport options and adding infrastructure to support that
Sustainable Community Design
Reducing pollution & consumption
e.g., energy efficient, less use of fossil fuels, more local production, less cars, more exercise
Quality of Life
Building relationships thru community-centered design and human-centered design.
