1.0 Network Fundamentals Flashcards
Explain the role and function of Routers
Layer 3 device that transports packets between networks.
Explain the role and function of layer 2 and layer 3 switches.
Directs Frames (layer 2) to their destination using MAC addresses. Layer 3 switches have the same L2 capabilities with added L3/packet support. L3 switches do not have as many features for L3 traffic as a router.
Explain the role and function of a Next-generation firewall.
next-generation firewall must include:
-Standard firewall capabilities like stateful inspection
-Integrated intrusion prevention
-Application awareness and control to see and block risky apps
-Threat intelligence sources
-Upgrade paths to include future information feeds
Techniques to address evolving security threats
Explain the role and function of an IPS.
IPS is a security tool or service that helps an organization identify malicious traffic and proactively blocks it from entering their network.
Explain the role and function of an Access point.
An Access point is any device which can be accessed by the end user, allowing access to the network.
Explain the role and function of Controllers (Cisco DNA Center an WLC)
Controllers are devices that manage other devices (usually many). Cisco DNA center is for Enterprise networks and WLC is to manage wireless networks.
Explain the role and function of Endpoints
Endpoints are remote computing devices that connect to a network and communicates back and forth with the other devices on the network. some people might refer to this as a host, examples: Laptop, PC, Workstations etc…
Explain the role and function of Servers
A server is a computer that provides data to other computers. It may serve data to systems on a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN) over the Internet. Many types of servers exist, including web servers, mail servers, and file servers. Each type runs software specific to the purpose of the server.
What are the 3 layers of a 3 tier network topology
Access, distribution, core.
What happens at the Access tier
Access layer controls user and workgroup access to the resources on the network. This layer usually incorporates Layer 2 switches and access points that provide connectivity between workstations and servers.
What happens at the Distribution tier
Distribution layer serves as the communication point between the access layer and the core. Its primary functions are to provide routing, filtering, and WAN access and to determine how packets can access the core.
What happens at the Core tier
Core layer also referred to as the network backbone, this layer is responsible for transporting large amounts of traffic quickly. The core layer provides inter-connectivity between distribution layer devices.
What are the 2 layers of a 2 tier network topology
Access and collapsed core.
Describe the characteristics of Spine-leaf architecture
Used mainly in data centers. Multiple spine switches connect to every rack, to its Top Of Rack (TOR) (leaf) switch. full mesh between spine and leaf.
Describe the characteristics of a WAN architecture
Connections used to connect a private network over great distances (Anywhere from library to admin office to country to country.)
