1.0 Mobile Devices MEMORIZE Flashcards
What are the three main types of storage you will find in a laptop? What are the differences?
- SSD uses flash memory for fastest response times possible.
- MAGNETIC is a traditional drive that spins and reads, using specialized equipment.
- HYBRID (SSHD)is a combination of both drives and typically more cost effective than a full SSD.
What are the two form factors for laptop storage?
- 1.8 in
- 2.5 in
Laptop memory typically comes in which two form factors?
- SO-DIMM (Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module)
- Micro-DIMM (even smaller than the SO-DIMM)
Many laptops come with this type of reader build it, which provides an authentication mechanism.
Smart Card Reader
Most smaller laptops do not include this type of peripheral commonly used to read a certain type of physical media.
Optical Drive
Many mobile devices have which two cards to facilitate connections to A. the internet and B. PANs (Personal Area Networks)
WiFi card and Bluetooth
Rarely do laptops have this, but every phone has this type of card for connecting to a Wide Area Network
Cellular Card
A commonly used small form-factor for adapter cards such as wireless, bluetooth, etc.
Mini PCIe
What is the name of the jack on the laptop that provides charging and power capabilities?
DC Jack
How do laptops utilize the DC jack to receive power?
Chargers will come with an AC-DC power converter that is a part of the charger. This takes the AC power from the wall outlet and converts it to DC power that the laptop can use.
What is the most popular type of laptop battery in use today? What is the disadvantage of this kind of battery?
Lithium Ion. These batteries degrade over time and will eventually need to be replaced in order to maintain a charge.
The input device found on laptops that allows you to move the cursor around the screen with you’re finger(s)
Touchpad
What is a common material used for laptop frames that is inexpensive and makes the device lighter to carry around?
Plastic frames
Are laptop system boards easy to replace? Why or why not?
The replacement process is often complex due to the system boards commonly being proprietary to the laptop make and model.
What are the two types of displays common to mobile devices?
LCD and OLED
LCD technology requires backlighting through liquid crystals. What are two methods of backlighting an LCD display?
- CCFL: cold cathode fluorescent lamps: older technology; needs more power than backlighting.
- LED: brighter and more energy efficient than CCFL
What sets OLED apart from LCD?
OLED does not require backlighting, as the organic light emitting diodes emit light. OLED displays look sharper then LCDs, however they are fragile and expensive.
What is the best way to install a wifi antenna on a laptop?
It is important that antenna wiring be placed as high as possible to get the best signal from within your laptop case. Typically, these wires wrap around the outside edges of your display. This is also done to get the best signal possible.
Older laptops utilize CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps). What does a laptop require in order for a CCFL display to function?
INVERTER:
CCFL runs on AC power. In order to convert the DC power of the laptop to AC, the device must have an inverter
This is a device to which you can connect a laptop, and it will handle any external ucntions needed, like display, power and USB ports
Docking station
A device similar to a docking station but more limited, smaller, and does not have support for power supply or adapter card slots. Only for connecting external displays, keyboard, mice, and the like.
Port Replicator
What is the difference between Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)?
VR: Replace reality with a computer-generate version
AR: Overlay a virtual augmentation with the physical world
Name 4 common types of wired mobile device connectors.
Micro-USB - must be inserted in a specific way
Mini-USB - must be inserted in a specific way (bigger than micro-USB)
USB-C - Can be inserted either way
Lighting - Proprietary connector for Apple Devices, more durable and simpler than USB standard
What is the difference between tethering and a hotspot?
Tethering uses your phone’s cellular network to provide service to another device USING A WIRED CONNECTION.
Hotspots: a mobile hotspot allows wireless connections to your phone for the purpose of tethering
A high-speed communication technology for use over short distances
PAN (Personal Area Network) Commonly known as BLUETOOTH
A communication technology used for short distance, commonly used for TVs and other entertainment devices. Line of sight is required

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
What are two email protocols used for RECEIVING email from an email server?
- POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3)
* IMAP4 (Internet Message Access Protocol)
This email protocol generally deletes messages from the server once retrieved by the client.
POP3
This email protocol allows more control of the server, and allows the client to do things like create folders and organize messages.
