10 Metals Flashcards

1
Q

Properties of metals (6)

A

High melting and boiling points

ductile - metal can be drawn out to form thin wires of without snapping

2
Q

Why can metals conduct electricity (3)

A

Conducts electricity because of metallic bonding

metal atoms give up one or more of their electrons to form cations

The free electrons surround the cations and the positive and negative charges attract, holding the structure together

Q

Why are metals ductile and malleable (3)

A

Layers of ions are able to slide over each other

Metallic bonds between positive cations and negative anions not too strong

Hence, ions can be hammered out into different shapes

Q

Group 1 reaction with water

A

Most reactive

Potassium - lilac flame produced with lots of hydrogen gas produced
Sodium - fizzes around the water and giving off hydrogen gas
Lithium - bubbles of hydrogen gas given off

Least reactive
