Amoxicillin
SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea, vomiting diarrhea rash, yeast infection.

- Type of infection.
- Assess pain level.
- Vitals signs
- Any allergies to penicillin?

- Urge patient to take amoxicillin for full length of time, even if they feel better.
- Educate patient to report adverse effects.

SIDE EFFECTS
Dizziness, palpitations, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, perianal irritation, vomiting, muscle weakness.

Abdominal assessment
• Inspect, auscultate, percuss, and palpate.
• Ask patient:
• Ask the patient when was last bowel movement? Ask patient about stool? Any blood? Hard? Soft?

- Educate patient to discontinue docusate if abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting
- Educate pt to take docusate with a full glass of milk or water
- Educate pt to increase fiber, exercise regularly, and drink 6-8 glasses of water daily to help prevent constipation.
- Notify provider if rectal bleeding.
- Warn pt this is used for short term therapy; long term can cause constipation.

- Pain Level
- Medications: Taking any blood-thinners? Last time took pain medication?
- Vital Signs
- GI: Ask patient if any blood in stool?

- Do not crush time-release tablets.
- Educate pt to take Aspirin with food or after meals, may cause upset if on empty stomach.
- Do not take with other NSAIDS
- Avoid alcohol

SIDE EFFECTS
Dizziness headache weakness abdominal pain nausea dry mouth.

- Assess location, duration, intensity, and precipitating factors of patient’s anginal pain
- Monitor BP and pulse before and after administration
- continuous ECG and BP monitoring
- Medications: Taking any Viagra? Erectile dysfunction Meds?

- Educate patient on signs and symptoms of adverse effects.
- Change positions slowly to minimize orthostatic hypotension
- Take medication as directed, do not disrupt abruptly.
- Avoid alcohol
- Take medication at first sign of angina attack. WARN: 3 times in 15 minutes, 5 minutes apart.
- Keep med in original bottle

- Vitals signs: monitor BP, ECG, and pulse frequently during therapy.
- Auscultate lung and heart sounds.
- Fall-risk assessment

- Instruct pt to take Metoprolol with food at the same time each day. Do not disrupt abruptly. EF tablets do not chew or crush.
- Monitor pulse and BP
- For diabetics, check blood glucose often.
Ferrous Sulfate
SIDE EFFECTS
Dizziness, nausea, constipation, dark stools, GI bleeding, temporary staining of teeth.

• Assess nutritional status and dietary history
• Ask patient when was their last bowel movement? Consistency of stool? Vomiting?
• LABS: Hgb, Hematocrit, iron levels.

- Educate patient on signs and symptoms of adverse effects.
- Take medication as directed
- Instruct patient to follow a diet high in iron and rich in vitamin C.
- Advise patient that stools may become dark green or black.
- To minimize tooth staining: mix with fruit juice, tomato juice, or water.
Furosemide
SIDE EFFECTS
Dizziness, headache, orthostatic hypotension, constipation, diarrhea, fever, dehydration.

- Obtain patient weight, I&O
- LABS: Monitor electrolytes, renal, and hepatic function.
- Fall-risk assessment.

- Take medication as directed. If taking once daily, take it in the morning to avoid nocturia.
- Caution patient to change positions slowly to minimize orthostatic hypotension

- Educate pt. on weight and diet control, limit sodium.

- Educate patient on signs and symptoms of adverse effects.
- Take medication as prescribed. Take with or right after food.
- Educate pt. on diet, potassium is part of a normal diet and found in foods (meats, seafood, vegetables). Do not exceed recommended daily amount.
- Teach pt. to take radial pulse. Monitor heart rate and rhythms. Report significant changes.
- Instruct pt. to report any dark, tarry, or bloody stools.
Oxycodone/acetaminophen
SIDE EFECTS
Confusion, sedation, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation.

- Avoid alcohol.
- Take as prescribed. Warn pt. Oxycodone can lead to abuse, addiction, misuse, or overdose.
- Advise patient to make position changes slowly to minimize orthostatic hypotension.
- Take tablet whole, do not chew, crush or break.
