GEOGRAPHY
Describes the earth
GEOGRAPHER
Someone whose work is geography is called a geographer
HISTORIAN
Someone whose work is history is an historian.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GEOGRAPHER AND AN HISTORIAN?
Historians look at events over the course of time.
Geographers view the world by looking at the use of space on earth, and the interactions that took place I these spaces. They look for patterns and connections between people and the land they live on.
WHAT ARE THE 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY?
- Location
- Place
- Regions
- Movement
- Human Environmental Interaction
You need to be able to describe each of the five themes!
- LOCATION
Where is it?
ABSOLUTE LOCATION
Absolute location is the EXACT PLACE where a particular point or object exists.
TWO WAYS TO ESTABLISH ABSOLUTE LOCATION?
- Latitude and Longitude
2. Exact street address
RELATIVE LOCATION
Relative location is a description of how a place is related to other places.
EXAMPLES OF RELATIVE LOCATION
- Describing how I get to a certain place
2. Telling someone the quickest route to take to another city
- PLACE
- What is it like?
- A place can be described.
- What makes it unique? Human and physical characteristics-
- Human characteristics: language spoken, culture, religion, food to name a few.
- Physical characteristics: landforms and water forms that make up the place.
- REGION
How is one place or area different from another?
A region is a group of places that have at least one common characteristic.
Examples: the USA Northeast; Southern Italy; the Middle East
