Define a bad debt
When a debtor is unable or unwilling to pay the invoice
Define a doubtful debt
When a debt becomes uncertain, money may or may not be received. Examples:
- If there are many debtors, law of averages and human nature can suggest that a proportion may never be received.
- Press information suggesting a customer has become insolvent or bankrupt.
- If the debt has remained unpaid for quite a long time, it can suggest that the repayment is uncertain.
