research methods

1
Q

what are the 6 different research methods?

A

(1) lesioning
(2) electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB)
(3) CT scan (computerized tomography)
(4) MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
(5) PET (positron emission imaging)

Q

what is ESB?

A

sending a weak electric current into the brain structure to stimulate it.

Q

what is a CT scan?

A

it is a computer-enhanced x-ray of the brain structure, it is the least expensive and most widely used.

Q

what is a MRI scan?

A

uses magnetic fields, radio waves and computerized enhancement to map out the brain structure. provides much better images of the brain structure than the CT scan, produces 3D images.

Q

what is a PET scan?

A

uses radioactive markers to map chemical activity in the brain over time. radioactively tagged chemicals are introduced into the brain, and serves as markers of blood flow or activity in the brain.

Q

what is fMRI?

A

variations in MRI technology that can monitor blood flow and oxygen consumption in the brain to identify areas of high activity.
