10/13 lecture Flashcards
What is the difference between fat and lipids
lipids include fat + other molecules
Fats: triglycerides
What is the difference between fat and oil
oils are trans bonds
fats are cis bonds
Which fat is good, bad and ugly
good: poly(omega 3 and 6) and mono
bad: saturated fats
ugly: transfats
What are the biological role of phospholipids
- Stabilize lipoprotein particles in the aqueous medium due to their amphipathic nature
- vital components of cell and organelle membranes where they form bilayers and serve as a selective barrier for the passage of water-soluble and fat soluble materials across the membrane
- serve as a sources of physiologically active compounds
what are biological functions of cholesterol?
- constituent of plasma membranes
- precursors for many important steroids’ including the bile acids, steroid sec hormones, the adrenocortical hormones and vit D
what are the essential fatty acids?
Alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3)
linoleic acid
(omega 6)- we do not need as much
Why are ALA and LA are essential fatty acids
Our bodies are not able to synthesis the double bond before the 9th carbon in the chain
what is more important regarding for n-3 and n-6 fatty acids intake recommendation
the ratio (n-6 and n-3)
4:1
What is this digestion of triglycerides?
- (mouth) triglyceride –lingual lipase –> tri
What are the general steps with regard to dietary lipids absorption
Absorption
reassemble
release
What is different between colipase and lipase regarding their function
Colipase acts as an environment stabilizer
How is FA transported from GI tract into enterocytes
lacteal (lympathic system) and then into the blood stream
Where are lipoproteins synthesized?
what is the main function of lipoprotein (chylomicron)?
primarily delivers TAG
Diet (SI) –> periphery
What Apo protein is present on each _____
