1) What is Science and what is the scientific endeavour? Flashcards
What is the underlying assumption of science?
The universe has an independent, external reality accessible to human senses and amenable to human reason
What does pure science aim to do in regards to the external universe?
Pure science aims to come to a common understanding of this external universe.
Is there only one ‘scientific method’?
No. Scientists use a wide variety of methodologies which, taken together, make up the process of science.
How do scientists communicate?
Scientists have a common terminology and a common reasoning process.
Do scientists believe every single claim put forward?
No. Scientists must adopt a mskeptical attitude to claims. The claims must be supported by strong evidence and argument
What is evidence predominately used for?
- It is used to develop theories
- Which forms laws
- Propose hypotheses
What are models (simple or complex) used for in science?
They are based on theoretical understanding and are developed to explain processes that may not be observable.
Why are computer mathematical models becoming so powerful in science?
It involves large amounts of data, a large number of variables and complex calculations.
Give an example of a model and what it can be used to predict.
- Modelling the Earths climate
- Predict future climatical conditions
