1. Water Flashcards
1
Q
Give a property of water
A
polar, solvent, reactive
2
Q
Why is water important? (6 THINGS)
A
- Water is a METABOLITE so it is important for reactions such as condensation and hydrolysis reactions
- Water is a SOLVENT so substances dissolve in it. Most metabolic reactions take place in solutions such as cytoplasm in cells.
- Water has a very high latent heat of VAPORISATIONwhich allows it to evaporate heat energy off mammals cooling them down through processes like sweating.
- Water has a HIGH SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY due to the presence of many hydrogen bonds - this means that organisms can live at a fairly stable temperature. It also acts as a temperature buffer
- Water molecules are very COHESIVE due to lots of hydrogen bonds, this helps support water in the xylem tubes and produce surface tension when water meets air.
- The solid is less dense than the liquid meaning that it allows organisms to live under the ice.
3
Q
Polarity of water
A
Oxygen - negative
Hydrogen - positivem
4
Q
Hydrogen bonding
A
- weak bonds between slightly positive hydrogen and slightly negative oxygen
