Q

Why is water important? (6 THINGS)

A
  1. Water is a METABOLITE so it is important for reactions such as condensation and hydrolysis reactions
  2. Water is a SOLVENT so substances dissolve in it. Most metabolic reactions take place in solutions such as cytoplasm in cells.
  3. Water has a very high latent heat of VAPORISATIONwhich allows it to evaporate heat energy off mammals cooling them down through processes like sweating.
  4. Water has a HIGH SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY due to the presence of many hydrogen bonds - this means that organisms can live at a fairly stable temperature. It also acts as a temperature buffer
  5. Water molecules are very COHESIVE due to lots of hydrogen bonds, this helps support water in the xylem tubes and produce surface tension when water meets air.
  6. The solid is less dense than the liquid meaning that it allows organisms to live under the ice.
