(1)Types Of Motorcycles And Atvs Flashcards
All Motorcycles and Atvs contain these 9 common components…
Engines Brakes
Electrical systems Seats
Tires and wheels Frames
Suspension systems Fuel tanks
Handlebars w/ controls
Fuel system…
Supplies correct ratio of air-to-fuel mixture for proper engine operation
Ignition system…
Provides timed electrical sparks to ignite the air-and-fuel mixture in the engines internal combustion chamber(s)
Drive train mechanism…
Transfers the energy from the engine to the drive wheel(s)
Brake system…
Stops the motorcycle quickly and safely
Frame and suspension system…
Absorbs vibrations and shock, to give riders a smoother, more comfortable ride over varying road surfaces
Motorcycles are divided into…
Categories by use. Each category is then subdivided by engine displacement.
Engine displacement…
Is a size measurement given in cubic centimeters (cc)
EX: 1000 cc engine has 1000 cubic centimeters of volume
Motorcycles are classified as (3)…
STREET
DUAL-PURPOSE
OFF-ROAD
ATVs are classified as…
THREE WHEELERS
FOUR WHEELERS
Street motorcycles…
Designed for use on paved roadways. Upright riding position. Easy-to-reach controls. Has no wind fairing.
Custom cruiser…
A variation of standard street motorcycle. Laid-back riding position.
Hot-rod cruisers…
Spin-off of standard street motorcycle. Riding position is slightly forward-leaning. Large powerful engines. Redesignes chassis and suspension systems.
Sport motorcycles…
Fastest, best-stopping, best-handling members of the street-type motorcycles available. Many used in road racing.
Touring motorcycles…
Large, well-equipped units designed for long-distance touring travel. Many equipped with AM/FM and CB radios, tape players, and cruise control. Equipped with large, weatherproof saddlebags. Most come with large fairing units.
Sport-touring motorcycles…
Designed for a comfortable no-frills, long-distance ride. Options such as radios + cruise control aren’t part of the sport-touring motorcycle design. High-performance engines, handle well at high speeds, provide a comfortable riding position(must for long trips).
Motor scooters…
Smallest members of street category. Often from 50cc-250cc. Economical, easy to park/store. Made for short distance urban or suburban commuting. Can be equipped with saddlebags to provide limited space. GAY.
Dual-purpose motorcycles…
Designed+manufactured to perform well both on and off paved highways. Share mechanical characteristics with both street motorcycles and off-road motorcycles. Equipped with more shock-absorbing suspension systems than standard street motorcycles, to handle off-road conditions. Special tires for improved traction on all road, and non-road, surfaces.
Off-road motorcycles…
Built to handle rough terrain, frames, suspension systems, and wheels are considerably stronger than those found on standard street motorcycles. Often used in extreme terrains. Most aren’t equipped with headlights and taillights. Wide variety from small to large and powerful. Offered with both two-stroke engines and four-stroke engines. Varies from 50cc to over 600cc.
All-terrain vehicles(ATVs) are equipped with either…
two-stroke or four-stroke engines ranging from 50cc-over 500cc.
Three-wheelers…
Tricycle-style models, commonly referred to as three-wheelers.
Four-wheelers…
Further divided into two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models.
ATVs are…
Used for off-road, racing, work+utility purposes. Three-wheelers are no longer in production. Can be unstable. Discontinued for safety reasons.
