Biological Racism
The idea that whites are the superior race
Implicit Bias
judgements that are made without conscious awareness
Racial Schemas
peoples own explanations about what it means to be part of a certain race
Ethnicity
unlike race that is usually externally put onto people, some people self-identify as ethnic.
Symbolic Ethnicity
having a love and respect for your ethnicity without actually practicing it regularly
Racialization
adding beliefs or customs to a previously unclassified group
What are the 5 steps to the racialization project?
selecting, sorting, attributing, essentnializing, acting
What are the 2 main aspects of Racism?
the belief, and the practice
Individual Racism
when one person discriminates againsst another on the basis of race. eg microagressions
Institutional Racism
when there are policies and laws in place that reproduce racial injustice
Systemic Racism
racist practices that are created by institutions
Structural Racism
when institutions have the power to withhold benefits from a certain race or group
Racial Formation Theory
The process in which racial ideologies are formed, carried through, and destroyed.
Racial Projects
an explanation of racial identities by distributing resources
Racist Racial Projects
creates dominative structures based on racial identities. eg slavery

1-Pan-ethnicizing processes
2-Hegemony vs Domination
Pan-ethnicisng processes
when different ethnic groups build identities with eachother. wanting to maintain their traditions, but also keeping unity with other ethnic groups.
Hegemony vs Domination
domination: legal assertion of racial superiority
hegemony: domination of one group over the other through norms and ideals
