Transfer of power from central government to regional government.

Asymmetric devolution
What is asymmetric devolution?
Regions have unequal power with England + Scotland having the most N.Ireland + Wales have the least
What is the difference between devolution (uk) and federalism (us)?
A difference between devolution in the UK and federalism in the USA is asymmetry. In a federal system, each regional government is granted equal powers. In the UK’s system, this is not the case.
What is the Good Friday Agreement?
Also known as the Northern Ireland Act 1998 created the N.Ireland assembly bringing an end to the troubles establishing a power sharing agreement.
Who opposed the Good Friday Agreement?
The Democratic Union Party (DUP) and refused to engage in agreement talks.
What was Brexit’s affect on the Good Friday Agreement?
Brexit impacted the boarder of Northern Ireland becasue it stated that there would be no hard boarder which meant that trade was made more difficult, post NIP, the Windsor Framework posed as a solution to this problem.
What happened to the N.Ireland assembly and what caused it?
- It was in a period of suspension until Jan 2020 due to it collapsing in 2017.
- Caused by disagreement of policy between power-sharing leadership.

What act was passed giving Scotland power?

What did the Scotland Act do?
- It granted devolution following a 60% referendum with it having 74%.
- It created a Scottish Parliament giving them their own powers.

How has devolution affected Scotland recently?
- Desire for independence has significantly increased
- Scotland want independence (IndyRef 2014 - 84% turnout) and following Brexit led to further calls for independence - H/E - S.C ruled that they needed permission from Westminster for another referendum.
What effect has devolution had on social policy?
It has led to inequality in social policy. In Scotland, nursing care for the elderly and Higher education is free- but not in England
What was the turnout of the Welsh devolution referendum?
What impact did this have on their power?
Low turnout of 50% with only 1/4 of the electorate voting if favour of devolution.
It led to them having significantly less powers than Scotland.
