The Blues
African-American music with links to spirituals and slave songs. Characterised by 12 bar blues chord progression, and lyrics in an AAB form.
Accompaniment
The music played by instruments that is heard behind the main performer.
Improvisation
The art of composing music while performing it, without the help of a written score.
12-bar blues
A chord sequence 12 bar long. Uses the chords I, IV and V, for example: C, F and G major.
Blues scale
A series of notes used in blues and jazz. C Eb F F# G Bb C.
7th Chord
A chord made up of 4 notes using the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th notes in a scale. Eg. C E G Bb. Used a lot in blues and jazz.
