Spain bans the use of Native Americans as slaves, not all slaves just Native American slaves and they weren’t strictly followed
Viceroyalty System
An official that runs a polity (organised territory) in the name of and as the representative of the monarch of the territory. They often come from noble families. A viceroyalty is that polity or organized territory.
Bartolomé de las Casas
First bishop of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. He devoted most of his life to protecting Amerindian peoples from exploitation. His major achievement was the New Laws of 1542, which limited the ability of Spanish settlers to compel Amerindians to labor.
Treaty of Tordesillas
A 1494 agreement between Portugal and Spain, declaring that newly discovered lands to the west of an imaginary line in the Atlantic Ocean would belong to Spain and newly discovered lands to the east of the line would belong to Portugal.
Captaincy System
A historical administrative division of the former Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires.
