1. Science Flashcards
1
Q
What is the goal of science?
A
- Explore, explain, and understand nature
- Make predictions
2
Q
Science
A
- Systematically organized way of using evidence to understand the natural world
- Evolving body of knowledge
3
Q
Observation
A
- Using one’s senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste) to gather information
4
Q
Data
A
- Information collected from observations
5
Q
Inference
A
- A logical conclusion based on experience or evidence
6
Q
Hypothesis
A
- Possible explanation for a scientific question or observation
- Only relevant if it can be tested
7
Q
How do scientists test their hypothesis?
A
- With an experiment
- Testing one variable at a time (if possible)
8
Q
Scientific Theory
A
- A thoroughly tested explanation that connects a wide range of observations
- Example: Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection
9
Q
Spontaneous Generation
A
- Hypothesis that has been discredited stating that life originated from nonliving matter
10
Q
Controlled Experiment
A
- Experiment where only one variable is changed at a time
- All other variables are unchanged or controlled
11
Q
Manipulated Variable
A
- Variable that is intentionally changed
- Example: Coffee before an exam, one class drinks coffee before taking an exam and another class does not
- Manipulated Variable is also called the Independent Variable
12
Q
Responding Variable
A
- Variable that is observed and changed in response to the manipulated variable
- Example: Test grade (with and without coffee)
- Responding variable is also called the Dependent Variable
13
Q
Name 9 characteristics of all living things
A
- All living things:
- Are made up of Cells
- Reproduce
- Grow
- Change over time
- Have a common Genetic Code
- Use Energy
- Respond to their Environment
- Adapt to their Environment
- Maintain a Stable Internal Environment
- Remember: SEA-CC-GG-RR
14
Q
Biology
A
- The study of living organisms
15
Q
Name the 6 levels of how life can be studied?
A
- Molecules
- Cells
- Organisms
- Populations of a single organism
- Communities of populations living in the same area
- Biosphere
- Remember: My Cat Only Purrs Can’t Bark
