1 - Sample Collection Flashcards
What sample and additive does the yellow top contain?
Gel: Serum, Clot accelerator
Give 2 tests the yellow top sample is used for
1) Urea and Electrolytes (U&E)
(kidney function) - urea, creatinine, Na, K
2) Liver function test (LFT) - Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alkaline phosphatase (ALK), Bilirubin , Albumin
3) Thyroid Function test (TFT) - Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free Thyroxine (T4)
What sample and additive does the red top contain?
Plain: no additives, allows sample to clot (no gel so unstable)
Give 2 tests the red top sample is used for
Drug levels
Toxicology
Viral serology
Immunology
What sample and additive does the light green top contain?
Separated Heparinised: Separates cells from plasma via gel additive (doesn’t clot due to heparin and haemolysis is slowed via gel)
Give 2 tests the light green top sample is used for
Renal test Accurate potassium (cells separate from plasma)
What sample and additive does the dark green top contain?
Sodium Fluoride/Potassium Oxalate : Fluoride/oxalate inhibits red cells consuming plasma glucose in vitro
TIME CRITICAL
Give a test the dark green top sample is used for
glucose
What sample and additive does the purple top contain?
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (EDTA): permanently chelates calcium
Give 2 test the purple top sample is used for
Full blood count
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
Group and screen (G&S), crossmatch (XM)
HBA1C
What sample and additive does the blue top contain?
Trisodium Citrate: plasma, reversibly binds and temporarily chelates calcium
Give a test the blue top sample is used for
Prothrombin time (PT) Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) D-Dimer Fibrinogen Factor deficiencies
Describe the 3 terms used to describe sample quality
Normal
Icteric, Haemolysed, Lipaemic Plasma
