1. Relationships & Families Flashcards
Give two Bible verses about the creation of male and female for humans.
Genesis 1:27-28 (“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”)
Mark 10:6-9 (“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”)
Consummation
Making a marriage complete with sexual intercourse.
Marriage
The legal/formal recognition of a union of two people as partners in a personal relationship.
Annulment
A statement by the Catholic Church that there was no valid marriage in the first place because one (or more) of the seven conditions was not met.
Complement
When two separate people possess characteristics that when combined, make them better than they were on their own.
Adultery
Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not their spouse.
Sanctity of Life
A Catholic teaching that states that life is holy and precious because it comes from God.
Divorce
The bringing to an end of a valid marriage between a couple.
Gender Prejudice
Actions or thoughts that are based on the belief that women are not equal to men in terms of rights and dignity.
Extramarital
Occuring outside of marriage
Consent
Where a person freely and voluntarily agrees to participate in an interaction.
Remarriage
A marriage that takes place after a previous marital union has ended.
Gender Discrimination
Treating someome unequally and disadvantageously based on a prejudical thought about their gender.
Unitive
Sex should unite couples and deepen their love, and therefore they become closer, more committed and fully give themselves to each other.
What is the definition and teaching of the word ‘Marital’?
Occuring within Marriage
Allows two people in love to publicly commit to each other, with promises of lifelong union, and requires sexual intercourse, and sex before or outside marriage is prohibited.
Procreative
God creates new life through sex, and so marriage contains the commitment to lovingly accept children as a gift from God, therefore creating more intensity in self-giving when opening a new life to the world.
‘God created humans beings in his image; male and female he created them’ (Genesis 1:27).
Give two main meanings:
Both men and women are created in the image of God, and blessed by him, and so they are equal.
Men and women should complement each other, by giving each other what the other lacks, producing a harmony which isn’t possible in isolation.
Give three teachings about the human body from Pope John Paul II’s ‘Theology of the Body’:
God loves every person and created both sexes to have equal dignity and value.
The full meaning of the body is appreciated through a deep relationship with the opposite sex within marriage.
True mutual love includes having only the number of children than can be lovingly cared for.
Give three reasons as to why the Catholic Church teach that sex before marriage is wrong.
- Sex with someone you are not married to trivialises (devalues) the sexual act and a key purpose of marriage.
- Casual sex is wrong, as it can cause harm to others, and instead should be with someone you love and trust.
- The gift of virginity makes husband and wife feel special, privileged and loved.
Give three Catholic views on contraception.
- Sex is important within marriage as it is an expression of the total commitment of the couple to each other.
- Using artificial contraception is not allowed as it makes sex non-procreative.
- Family planning (the practice of controlling how many children couples have, and when they have them) is allowed if it is done naturally.
Give three contrasting views on contraception.
- Contraceptives are essential to stop the spread of STIs.
- The Bible doesn’t forbid contraception.
- It can be medically necessary.
Give two Catholic teachings on homosexuality.
Homosexual people must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity.
Homosexual acts are sinful, as sex should occur within marriage and between a man and a woman, hence making homosexual relationships non-procreative.
Give two Catholic views on same sex marriage.
It is not recognised because it is not a sacramental union between a one man and one woman.
Same-sex couples cannot naturally have children, and so don’t meet the requirements for a valid Catholic marriage (procreation).
Give two contrasting views regarding same sex marriage.
Many don’t see having children as an essential part of marriage.
Homosexual people should have same rights as anyone else, including sexual relationships, love and marriage.
Give three reasons as to why adultery is wrong in the eyes of the Catholic Church / Catholics.
It breaks the vows made in marriage (to have and to hold from this day forward).
It betrays trust in the marriage, and causes harm and suffering to the innocent partner.
It brings distress/tensions into the home, and can cause the whole family to be unhappy.
Give two examples of artificial contraception.
Any two from:
Condom
Contraceptive Pill
Morning After Pill
Vaginal Rings
What two methods of ‘contraception’ does the Catholic Church accept?
Natural Family Planning
Celibacy before Marriage
What is NFP?
The practice of controlling how many children couples have, and when they have them by tracking periods to see when you’re most fertile and avoiding sex on those days.
