Define the term progressive wave
A wave that carries energy from one place to another without transferring any material
What is a wave caused by?
Something making particles or fields (e.g. electric or magnetic fields) oscillate at a source
Why does the source of the wave lose energy?
The wave is carrying energy away from the source
Name 4 ways you can tell waves carry energy
- EM waves cause things to heat up
- X-rays and gamma rays knock electrons out of orbit, causing ionisation
- Loud sounds cause large oscillations of air particles which can make things vibrate
- Wave power can be used to generate electricity
Name 3 behaviours of waves
- Reflection
- Refraction
- Diffraction
What happens to a wave during reflection?
The wave is bounced back when it hits a boundary
What happens to a wave during refraction?
The wave changes direction as it enters a different medium as a result of the wave speeding up or slowing down
What happens to a wave during diffraction?
The wave spreads out as it passes through a gap or round an obstacle
How is hearing a sound from around a corner possible?
The sound waves have been diffracted
What is meant by the displacement of a vibrating particle in a wave?
How far the vibrating particle has moved from its undisturbed position
What is the unit of measurement for displacement?
Metres
What is meant by the amplitude of wave?
The maximum magnitude of the displacement of a vibrating particle
Where is the amplitude of a wave for a transverse wave measured from?
- From equilibrium to the peak
