What are the eligibility requirements for a private pilot (airplane) certificate?
(14 CFR 61.103)
a. Be at least 17 years of age
b. Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English Language
c. Hold at least a current Third Class medical certificate
d. Recieved the required ground and flight training endorsements
e. Meet the applicable aeronautical experiance requirements
f. Passed the required knowledge and practical tests
What limitations of flying for compensation or hire apply to a private pilot?
(14 CFR 61.113)
No person who holds a private pilot certificate may do the following for compensation or hire:
• Act as pilot in command of an aircraft
• Act as pilot in command of an aircraft that is carrying passengers or property
Can a private pilot act as PIC in connection with a business or employment?
(14 CFR 61.113)
• Yes, only if it is incidental to that business or employment and does not carry passengers or property for compensation
How much money can a private pilot recieve for a flight with passengers?
(14 CFR 61.113)
No more than the pro rata share of the operating expenses of a flight with passengers.
Expense categories include:
• Fuel
• Oil
• Airport expenditures
• Rental fees
May a private pilot act as PIC of a charitable, nonprofit, or communit event flight?
Yes, only if the sponsor and pilot comply with the requirements outlined in 14 CFR 91.146
How much money can a private pilot recieve for direct involvement in search and locatoin operations?
If the operation is sanvtioned and under the direction and control of local, state, or Federal agencies or organizations that conduct search and locatoin operations,
all expenses in the following categories:
• Fuel
• Oil
• Airport expenditures
• Rental fees
May a private pilot demonstrate an aircraft in flight to a prospective buyer?
Yes, only if the private pilot:
• Is an aircraft salesman
• Has at least 200 hours of logged flight time
May a private pilot act as PIC of an aircraft towing a glider or unpowered ultralight vehicle?
Yes, provided the private pilot meet the requirments in outlined 14 CFR 61.69
May a private pilot act as PIC for the purpose of conducting a production flight test in a light-sport aircraft intended for certificatoin in a light-sport category?
Yes, provided the private pilot meet the requirements of 14 CFR 21.190
What does “may not pay less than pro-rata share of the operating expenses of a flight” mean in real english?
“Pro-rata” = Proportional
Operating costs = Fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees
May a private pilot split the pro-rata share of the operating expenses of a flight to a required annual inspection?
No
an annual inspectoin is considered a fixed or long term expense,
not operating expense
What must a pilot flightcrew member of a civil aircraft have in his/her physical possession or ready accessible in the aircraft?
- A pilot certificate (or special purpose authorization)
- A photo ID
- A medical certificate (exception in 14 CFR 61.3)

Who is considered an “Administrator”?
The Federal Aviation Administrator or any person to whom he/she has delegated authority to in the matter concerned.
