How is the gender pay gap calculated?
The difference in average hourly earnings of men and women as a proportion of men’s average hourly earnings
Why is the wage gap for all workers higher than full time and part time employees?
Because there are more women in part time jobs than men and they earn less than full time workers

When employers discriminate against certain workers
In theory what happens to firms that discriminate in perfect competition?
They fail since they are hiring the wrong type of workers and/or the wrong number of workers. They don’t make profits
In reality why aren’t discriminatory employers and their firms kicked out the market?
•Firms may have monopsony power and so they can reduce wages
•pre market discrimination may mean the two groups aren’t equally productive

•adverse impact when firm can’t easily hide its type 2 workers from view
Statistical discrimination
Where people use aggregate characteristics of a group as an indicator of a worker’s productivity.
Why is statistical discrimination potentially damaging?
•the UK has laws on using race, gender and other characteristics in payment decisions
•Info about groups may be incorrect or outdated
•can be vicious cycle as the atypical individuals from the discriminated group are discouraged
