(1) National and Global Energy Resources Flashcards
What is a renewable energy source?
Energy source which can be replenished as it is being used up
Give 4 examples of renewable energy sources
- Wind energy
- Hydro-electric power
- Tidal energy
- Solar energy
- Wave power
- Geothermal energy
Example of a non renewable energy source
Fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas)
State the environmental issues of using fossil fuels
- Carbon dioxide emissions contributes to global warming
- Sulfur dioxide leads to acid rain which damages building and crops
How is nuclear energy generated?
Comes from splitting atoms to create energy
Countries that use it include:
- Belgium
- Germany
- Finland
- France
Name 3 advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy
Advantages:
- no carbon emissions
- creates jobs
- lasts a very long time
Disadvantages:
- produces nuclear waste
- high risk of accident
- not renewable
What is tidal energy generated from?
From the gravitational pull of the sun and moon, natural form of kinetic energy
Name 3 advantages and disadvantages of tidal energy
Advantages:
- reliable because tides happen twice a day
- cheap to run (tides are natural)
- don’t produce greenhouse gases
Disadvantages:
- expensive to build
- can have impacts of ecosystems
- only produces energy when the tide goes in and out (10h per day)
Name 2 advantages and disadvantages of solar panels
Advantages:
- doesn’t produce greenhouse gases
- renewable
- low maintenance
Disadvantages:
- take up space
- expensive to buy
How is hydroelectric power produced?
Using a dam or river to generate electricity through a turbine
Name 2 advantages and disadvantages of hydroelectric power
Advantages:
- reliable
- efficient
Disadvantages:
- expensive
- not always safe
- may cause flooding
What social factors may act as a deterrent for certain types of energy production?
• visual pollution
• sound pollution
• safety
What are the main environmental concerns with using different energy sources?
• can cause migration patterns to change
• produce toxic waste
• disturb habitats
