What are the elements of gothic literature?
Disability, cultural patterns, jail or fate, tension, small towns, front porches, and worn down buildings
What is gothic literature?
Condescending to the group being portrayed (race, education, status, ext.)
Always outsider, freakishness, imprisonment, violence, and sense of place
Describe Flannery O’Conner.
She was diagnosed with Lupus at a young age and lived on a peacock farm in Georgia. She talks about peacocks in all her books,
What was O’Conner’s religious background
She was a Catholic in the Protestant”Bible Belt. The church was not very dramatic even though she wrote very dramatic things.
What was O’Conner’s social background?
Due to her lupus she did not get out as much and socialize like other kids her age. She also died young.
What did O’Conner write?
“Good country people” and “The life you save may be your own”
Describe William Faulkner.
Wrote stories that resemble his life and was popular in the south.
Where is Faulkner from?
He is from Oxford, Mississippi
What kind of man was Faulkner?
He struggled with alcoholism and adultery due to him being a ladies man. Declined a dinner to the White House. He often writes stories to represent his life.
What did Faulkner write?
“Rose for Emily” and short story collection “A knight’s Gambit”
What is Characterization?
Writer reveals the personality of a character
What is Direct Characterization?
Tells the audience what the personality of the character is
What is Indirect Characterization?
Shows things that reveal the personality of a character through speech, thought, effect on others, actions, and looks.
What is a Protagonist?
Heroes in the story, but they don’t always have to be good or possess only positive traits.
What is an Antagonist?
Against the main character, portrayed by the force of nature , animal, or else.
What is Round?
Characters with many different personalities and roles in the story
What is flat?
Characters that we know hardly anything about. Usually do not play a large role in the story.
Dynamic
Characters who change: (beliefs or morals) through conflict the characters face
What is static?
Do not change values or beliefs no matter their circumstances.
What is Symbolism?
Image which suggests or represents something other than itself.
Use something tangible (can be held) to represent something intangible (abstract idea).
Example of name symbolism
Mrs. Freedman (Good Country People) she was like a slave who cooked and cleaned for the family
Example of Color symbolism
“Her icy blue eyes” (Good Country People) shows her purity and goodness

The guy who tried to sell books when all he carried about was stealing her fake leg
