1. Life Cycles Flashcards
State an example for meiosis.
The stages in the life cycle of the malaria parasite.
What is the malaria parasite?
Single celled eukaryotic organism called a protist.
Why is the malaria parasite a eukaryote?
As prokaryotes don’t divide by meiosis or reproduce sexually.
When the mosquito bites the human, what happens?
It injects sporozoites into blood stream.
Which divide to form merozoites whoch are released into blood.
What do the sporozites invade?
Liver.
What happens when the sporozites invade the liver?
They fivide to from merozoites, which are released into the blood.
Where are the merozoites found?
In the red blood cells causing it to infect the mammal.
What is the gameocyte?
Its a cell specialising in the transition between human and the mosquito host.
Found in red blood cells.
What happens when the mosquito bits the human?
Ingests the gameocytes.
Initially how many chromosomes does the gametes in the mosquito have?
n.
Found in gut.
When the gametes form a zygote what happens?
The chromosome number doubles.
2n diploid.
Only stage in the malarial parasite which is.
All other stages are haploid n.
What happens to the zygote in the mosquito ?
Divides forming sporozoite.
Where are the sporozoites found in the mosquito?
Salivary glands.
What does 2n represent in a mosquito?
14 chromosomes/
In comparison to mosquitos, how do human zygotes divide?
By mitosis NOT meiosis.
