What is meant by ‘family’?
A monogamous marriage between a man & a woman, plus their child/children, all sharing the same residence. Any set of arrangements that those involved see as a family, is a family.
What is meant by ‘household’?
A person living alone or a group of people living together e.g. sharing meals, bills, housework ect. This group may or may not be related to one another.
What is meant by ‘family structure’?
The composition of a group of people who live together as a family unit.
What is meant by ‘nuclear family’?
Two generations: parents & children living in the same household.
What is meant by ‘extended family’?
All kin (relations of blood, marriage, adoption or civil partnership) including and beyond the nuclear family.
What is meant by ‘classic extended family’?
An extended family sharing the same household or living near each other.
What is meant by ‘modified extended family?’
An extended family living apart, but keeping in touch by phone, letters, email, social media and frequent visits.
What is meant by ‘beanpole family’?
A multi-generation extended family which is long and thin, few aunts/uncles/cousins, reflecting fewer children being born in each generation, but people living longer.
What is meant by ‘patriarchal family’?
A family where authority is held by males.
What is meant by ‘matriarchal family’?
A family where authority is held by females.
What is meant by ‘symmetrical family’?
A family where the authority and households tasks are shared between partners.
What is meant by ‘reconstituted family/step-family’?
One or both individuals previously married, with children from previous relationships.
What is meant by ‘lone-parent family’?
Lone parents with dependent children, commonly after separation, but may arise from death or unwillingness to marry/cohabit.
What is meant by ‘same-sex family’?
A same-sex family living together with their children.
What is meant by ‘single person household?’
An individual living alone.
What is meant by ‘pluralistic society?’
A society in which cultures and lifestyles are more diverse.
What is meant by ‘family diversity?’
Idea that there are a range of family types, rather that a single dominant one.
What is meant by ‘conjugal roles?’
The ‘roles’ played by spouses.
What is meant by ‘marriage?’
The legally or formally recognised union of two people as partners in a personal relationship.
What is meant by ‘first marriages?’
Marriages where one or both partners had never been married previously or formed a civil partnership.
What is meant by ‘remarriages?’
Marriages where one or both partners were previously married or formed a civil partnership.
What is meant by ‘civil partnership?’
A legal relationship which can be registered by two people who are not related to each other. The rights are similar to those of a marriage.
What is meant by ‘legal partnership?’
Either a civil partnership or marriage between either a same-sex or opposite-sex couple.
What is meant by ‘serial monogamy?’
A trend of marriage-divorce remarriages
What is meant by ‘civil ceremony?’
A non-religious legal marriage ceremony preformed by a government official or functionary.
What is meant by ‘secularisation?’
Transformation of a society from a religious valued society towards a non-religious society.
What is meant by ‘stigma?’
A strong feeling of disapproval that most people in society have about something, especially when this is unfair.
What is meant by ‘cohabitation?’
When an unmarried couple in a sexual relationship living together.
What is meant by ‘patriarchal?’
A society based on male domination. A system or ideology of male power over women.
What is meant by ‘divorce?’
The legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body.
What is meant by ‘separation?’
Financial and legal affairs of the couple are separated but they remain married and are not free to re-marry.
What is meant by ‘empty-shell marriages?’
Where the separated couple continue to live together but live as separate individuals and remain married in name only.
What is meant by ‘dual burden?’
When someone is responsible for two jobs, Usually applied to women who are in paid work, but also responsible for domestic labour.
What is meant by ‘triple shift?’
When a person deals with paid work ,domestic work and emotional work.
What is meant by ‘individualisation thesis?’
The duty to remain with the same partner for life, loses their hold over individuals meaning individuals become free to pursue their own self-interest.
What is meant by ‘serial monogamy?’
The fact or custom of having a number of sexual relationships one after another, but never at the same time.
What is meant by ‘childbearing?’
The act of having children.
What is meant by ‘Childrearing?’
How children are brought up and raised.
What is meant by ‘living apart together?’
People who are in a serious relationship but not married or cohabiting.
What is meant by ‘creative singlehood?’
A term coined by Stein to suggest that people are deliberately choosing to live alone.
What is meant by ‘families of choice?’
People who may not be blood related by blood or marriage but who feel a sense of belonging together and choose to define themselves as a family.
What is meant by ‘blended family?’
Family made up of stepchildren and half siblings.
What is meant by ‘?co-parenting’?
Both separated parents raise the child as they split their week between households.
What is meant by ‘bi-nuclear family?’
Two separate post-break up households that are seen as one family system.

A nuclear family composed of dual earners.

The continued extended family relationship after a couple divorces.
What is meant by ‘family practices?’
The everyday actions that family members undertake with the intention of impacting one another.

A sequence of socially defined events and roles that the individual enacts over time.
What is meant by ‘life course analysis?’
In-depth unstructured interviews with families to explore the meaning of events and understand the choices people have made.

The influence of traditional structures and norms are weakening. This leading to more family diversity, risk and instability.

individuals life course is constructed by themselves, and this has a huge implications for the family.
What is meant by ‘pure relationship?’
A relationship held together by being based on satisfying needs and not societal norms.
What is meant by ‘negotiated family?’
Families decide what is best for them and what meets their needs and wishes.

The family appears to be alive but in reality its dead. People want to be secure in an insecure world but the family is too unstable to provide this.
