1: Evidence Based Medicine Flashcards
What is a systematic review?
Review of all the evidence on a topic which is has a clear method
Plus some analysis of the data
What is a meta-analysis?
When data from several studies on the same topic is put together via statistical means
What happens in Phase I of clinical trials?
Pharmacology
i.e determining the correct dosage of drugs and whether they’re safe or not
maybe animal testing?
What happens in Phase II of clinical trials?
Initial clinical assessment
trials on a limited number of patients to determine likely effectiveness and common adverse effects
What happens in Phase III of clinical trials?
Rigorous testing of the drug
Randomised control trials and the like
What happens in Phase IV of clinical testing?
Post-marketing surveillance
to determine the drug’s uncommon side effects
What phase of clinical trials involves rigorous testing of a drug?
Phase III
What phase of clinical trials involves post-marketing surveillance for uncommon side effects?
Phase IV
What phase of clinical trials involves the initial pharmacological testing of a drug?
Phase I
What phase involves the initial clinical assessment of a drug’s effectiveness?
Phase II
What does randomised mean in terms of randomised control trials?
Population receiving intervention are different from the control group through RANDOM VARIATION only
What does controlled mean in terms of randomised control trials?
Intervention is compared to a CONTROL:
placebo, gold-standard or best practice
Randomisation of patients taking part in a trial reduces ___.
bias
In randomised control trials, patients are only selected if they are:
1) likely to ___ from the treatment
2) unlikely to be ___ by the treatment
benefit
harmed
What are some outcomes measured in clinical trials?
Death
Symptoms
Clinical measurements (e.g quality of life)
