1 Emergency Medical Services Flashcards
Emergency medical responders skills
CPR
AED
spine immobilization
hemorrhage control
auto-injectors
first on the scene of an emergency (people with BLS training, police, firefighters)
Emergency medical technicians skills
CPR
O2 administration
hemorrhage control
immobilization
patient extrication
transportation
can administer certain over-the-counter meds
EMTs function as part of an ambulance crew
Advanced emergency medical technician skills
additional assessment skills
plus
placement of IVs and supraglottic airway devices and
administration of some medications
have highest skill level
paramedics
because of their advanced level of training, paramedics function under a designated physician’s supervision
This template for data reporting has enhanced the quality of cardiac arrest studies
UTSTEIN TEMPLATE
- systematic and standardized format for reporting cardiac arrest data
-facilitates comparison of results of studies from different EMS systems
Type I ground ambulance
standard truck (e.g. pick-up) chassis with a separate modular box to carry personnel, patient, and equipment
Type II ground ambulance
an enlarged van-type vehicle
Type III ground ambulance
a van chassis with an integrated modular box on the back for medical care and equipment
this represents the weakest link in disasters
Communications
It is important the EMS communication systems have built-in redundancy to ensure uninterrupted service
remarks on patient transfer
All patients must receive a medical screening exam and be stabilized before transfer.
There must also be explicit acceptance of the transfer by the receiving hospital
an important message EMS can convey to the public is the importance of learning:
CPR, first aid, and basic disaster preparedness
A public that is adequately prepared and trained will be in a better position to safely await help
EMS agencies must maintain a high level of disaster preparedness. This involves:
Policies and procedures
Stockpiling supplies that may be depleted in multicasualty situations
and Participating in regional disaster drills with other emergency response agencies and hospitals
This has the potential to increase cardiac arrest resuscitation rates
more widespread use of AED by first responders and the public
because early defibrillation is the most important factor in surviving a cardiac arrest
