1. Ecology Flashcards
Malthus
The population cannot be sustained and will decline as a result of insufficient resources
Club of Rome limits to growth (1972)
Shows that there is a limit to the amount of people, pollution, services and food production - eventually leading to a large increase in death rates
Boserup
No matter how large the population grows, we will discover new ways to sustain food supplies
Low dependency ratio
- Develop resources efficiently
- Economic growth
- Potential for demographic dividend
- Increased standing of living
- Increased GDP
- Population will increase
High dependency ratio
- Ageing population
- Resources spent on dependants
- Slow economic growth
- Low standard of living
- Lower GDP
- Population will struggle to increase without negative social + economic impacts
Carrying capacity
The maximum population an environment can support
- amount + consumption of resources
- technological innovation
- wealth
- As resources increase we have a higher carrying capacity, leading to economic growth so there is a lower mortality rate.
Ecological footprint
How many resources a person uses
- richer countries have a higher ecological footprint
- for sustainable growth, ecological footprint has to decrease
