1 Disaster Preparedness Flashcards
a standard emergency management system
Incident Command System
- used when there is an identifiable single scene for a disaster event, such as the site of a plane crash
- provides a management system that is adaptable to incidents involving a multiagency or mutlijurisdictional resposne
At the most basic level, the 5 main components of the ICS are
- Incident Command
- Operations
- Planning
- Logistics
- Finance
With this type of organization infrastructure and the flexibility to expand and collapse as needed, an orderly and efficient response to any incident can theoretically be implemented.
Responsibilities of the Emergency Operations Center (Incident Command Post)
- Communicating with the ED and triage area and with external autorities (regional EMS, police, fire, and public health agencies)
- opening up additional hospital wards or clinics
- Obtaining outside assistance
- Evacuating endangered patients
- Assigning staff to treatment areas
- Terminating the disaster mode of operation
Elements of field disaster response
Field triage
Field medical care
Communications
Distribution of casualties
Management of on-site disaster medical teams
when extrication will be prolonged, interventions such as _______ should be instituted in the field
fluid resuscitation and pain control
When patients are likely to have significantly *delayed transport from a scene, the ______ triage system may be helpful
Secondary Assessment of Victim Endpoint (SAVE)
- identifies patients who are most likely to benefit from the care avaiable under austere field conditions
*delayed transport when the number of casualties exceeds transportation capacity or or there’s damage to hospital infrastructure
SAVE category 1
Patients who will die regardless of how much care they receive
SAVE category 2
Patients who will survive whether or not they receive care.
SAVE category 3
Patients who will benefit significantly from austere field interventions
