What is development?
When someone/community reach an acceptable way of living. It can be looked at by the standard of living and quality of life
What is the standard of living?
- It is the monetary value of living
- It is factual, objective and quantitative
- eg the amount if money on average a person living in a country has
What is the quality of life?
- It is about the general welfare of people
- It is an opinion, it is subjective and it is qualitative
- eg. the access to healthcare and education
What is HDI?
- It is the human development index
- It is a measure of development which consists of GNI/capita, year in education and life expectancy
What are the 4 different ways development is measured?
- Social
- Economic
- Environmental
- Political
What is an example of social development?
The number of children in education
Or the number of people who have access to healthcare
What is an example of economic development?
The amount of money one makes per year
What is an example of environmental development?
The amount of waste a country puts into landfill per year
What is an example of political development?
The relationship between other countries
What is GNI?
It is a measure of economic activity within a country. It is the amount of money in a country divided by the number of people in that country
What big company uses GNI as a measure of development?
The World Bank
What are the advantages of GNI?
- It is all measured in USD $ meaning is is easy ti compare
- Itindicates what a country can and cannot do financially
- It shows if a country needs and help from other countries
What are the disadvantages of GNI?
- Unequal distribution, all the wealthy people could be located in one area and the poorer people in another
- It only looks at one aspect of development
- It can be manipulated by the governemnt
What are the advantages of HDI?
- It uses economic and social measures of development
- It provides a more holistic view of the level of development within a country
- It shows the quality if life as well as the standard of living
- It cannot be manipulated by the government
What is the continuum of development?
Development is never ending, this is because the world is changing so when a country has ‘reached’ its acceptable way of living the acceptable way of living can change in the next few years
