1. Chemical changes A Flashcards
Why are noble gases unreactive?
Atoms of noble gases have complete valence shells. Atoms that have complete valence shells are low in energy and inherently stable.
What does it mean when an atom has a complete valence shell?
It is unreactive as it is low in energy and inherently stable.
What are the properties of atoms with incomplete valence shells?
They are inherently unstable and very reactive. Hence, they want to react in order to obtain the electronic configuration of noble gases.
What is ionic bonding?
Ionic bonding occurs in compounds that are comprised of a metal and non-metal.
What is a positively-charged ion?
A cation.
What is a negatively-charged ion?
An anion.
What happens during ionic bonding?
The metal transfers its valence electrons to the non-metal.
What is covalent bonding?
Covalent bonding occurs between the atoms of non-metallic elements.
Can atoms be of the same element in covalent bonding?
Yes.
What happens during covalent bonding?
The atoms share a pair or more of electrons to obtain the electronic configuration of a noble gas that is closest to them in the periodic table.
