13
Q

compare plant and animal cells.

A
  • animal cells do not have a cell wall.
  • animal cells do not have chloroplasts
  • animal cells have small vacuoles and plant cells have one large vacuole.

15
Q

describe the plasma membrane.

A
  • made up of a phospholipid bilayer
  • phospholipids contain a hydrophilic phosphate head and a hydrophobic fatty acid tail
  • bilayer contains membrane proteins assisting in transportation

16
Q

three types of passive transport

A

simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis

17
Q

simple diffusion

A

molecules moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration due to kinetic energy stored in molecules.

18
Q

facilitated diffusion

A

molecules are too large/charged to cross, therefore a protein is used to transport the molecule
(eg. channel proteins let specific proteins through, carrier proteins bind to the molecule and change their shape)

19
Q

osmosis

A

diffusion of water from an area of low solute (high solvent) to a high solute (low solvent) concentration.

20
Q

define hypertonic and hypotonic

A

hypertonic solutions have comparatively high solute concentrations.
hypotonic solutions have comparatively low solute concentrations.
