1: Biological Molecules Flashcards
1
Q
Define hydrogen bonding and give an example of where it occurs.
A
- e- in molecule aren’t evenly distributed
- they spend more time in 1 position making region more -ve than rest of the molecule
- molecule with uneven charge distribution is polarised/polar.
- -ve region of 1 polar molecule and +ve region of another attract, forming weak electrostatic bond
- collectively these produce strongest forces out of the 3 bonds. can be found in water.
2
Q
What’s a condensation reaction? Give two examples.
A
reaction that produces a larger molecule and removes a water molecule.
e. g. forming polypeptides from AAs
e. g. forming starch from glucose
3
Q
What’s hydrolysis? Give an example.
A
reaction where adding water breaks molecule bonds, splitting molecule into reactants
e. g. polypeptides hydrolyse into AAs
e. g. starch hydrolyses to glucose
