Q

Define hydrogen bonding and give an example of where it occurs.

A
  • e- in molecule aren’t evenly distributed
  • they spend more time in 1 position making region more -ve than rest of the molecule
  • molecule with uneven charge distribution is polarised/polar.
  • -ve region of 1 polar molecule and +ve region of another attract, forming weak electrostatic bond
  • collectively these produce strongest forces out of the 3 bonds. can be found in water.

Q

What’s a condensation reaction? Give two examples.

A

reaction that produces a larger molecule and removes a water molecule.

e. g. forming polypeptides from AAs
e. g. forming starch from glucose

Q

What’s hydrolysis? Give an example.

A

reaction where adding water breaks molecule bonds, splitting molecule into reactants

e. g. polypeptides hydrolyse into AAs
e. g. starch hydrolyses to glucose
