1 Atomic Sturcture and the Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the names of the electron sub shells?
s, p, d, f
Describe “s-orbitals”
- have a spherical shape
- all shells contain one s-orbital
Describe “p-orbitals”
- have a dumbbell shape
- all shells from n=2 upwards contain three p-orbitals (x, y, z)
Describe “electron spin”
- caused by the momentum that an electron has
- two electrons in the same orbital have opposite spins
Define “first ionisation energy”
The energy required to remove 1 mole of electrons from 1 mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous positive ions
Factors affecting ionisation energy?
- shielding effect
- distance from the nucleus
- nuclear charge
Define “second ionisation energy”
The energy required to remove 1 mole of electrons from 1 mole of gaseous unipositive ions to form 1 mole of gaseous dipositive ions
Define “energy level”
Energies of electrons in atoms
Define “electronic configuration”
Describes the number and arrangement of electrons in an atom of the element
Define “electron sub-orbitals”
Sub-divisions of the electron shells in atoms
Define “electron orbital”
A region in the atom that can hold up to 2 electrons with opposite spins
Define “mass to charge ratio”
Ratio of the relative mass of an ion to its charge
Define “period”
Horizontal row of elements in the Periodic Table
Define “group”
Vertical column of elements in the Periodic Table
