Psychological disorder
A psychological dysfunction within an individual associated with distress or impairment in functioning and a response that is not typical or culturally expected.
Psychological dysfunction
Breakdown in behavioural,emotional or cognitive functioning
Distress
Occurs when a person is extremely upset
Atypical or not culturally expected response
Refers to those behaviours or attitudes that do not occur in a society very frequently
DSM-IV-TR Definition of abnormal behavior
Behavioural, emotional or cognitive dysfunctions that are unexpected in their cultural context and associated with personal distress or substantial impairment in functioning
Three main foci of research of psychological disorders
Clinical description, causation, and treatment and outcomes
A presenting problem
Refers to one first noted as the reason for coming to a clinical setting
Prevalence
Refers to the number of people in the population as a whole who have the disorder
Incidence
Refers to the number of new cases of a disorder occurring during a specific period of time (eg. A year)
Course (related to prognosis)
Refers to the pattern of disorder over time.
It can be described as chronic, episodic or time-limited.
Chronic course- lasts a long time, sometimes a lifetime.
Episodic course- likely to recover within a few months only to suffer a recurrence of the disorder at a later time. Pattern may repeat throughout a person’s life.
Time-limited course- Disorder will improve without treatment in a relatively short period.
Acute onset
Refers to disorders that begin suddenly
Insidious onset
Refers to disorders that develop gradually over time.
Prognosis
Anticipated course of a disorder
Prognosis is good- individual will probably recover
Prognosis is guarded - probable outcome doesn’t look good
Causation
Aetiology/Etiology
Refers to factors or dimensions that cause psychological disorders.
Such factors Include biological , psychological and social dimensions
Psychopathology
Scientific study of psychological disorders
Clinical Description
The distinctive combination of behaviours , feelings and thoughts which make up a particular disorder.
It differentiates the disorder from other disorders and normal behaviours
Presenting problem
The reason why the person came to the clinic
