1 (a) Characteristics of Living Organisms Flashcards
1.1-1.4
What characteristics do all living things share & why are they important?
1.1
- All living organisms share the same characteristics “MRS GRENC”
- If something does not carry out these life processes/characteristics, it is either dead or non-living. Ex. Viruses
- Movement, Respiration, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition, Control
What is MOVEMENT?
1.1
- Definition:
An action by an organism, causing a change of position or place.
- Example:
Organisms move towards water and food, and away from predators and poisons
Plants do not move from place to place, they change their orientation depending on the direction of light/sun
What is RESPIRATION?
1.1
- Definition:
-All chemical processes that occur within an organism to keep it alive.
-A set of chemical reactions in cells of living organisms, that breaks down nutrient molecules to produce/release energy for metabolism.
- Energy is released from glucose, either in
the presence of oxygen - aerobic respiration (glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water)
the absence of oxygen - anaerobic respiration
- Energy is transferred in the form of ATP
What is SENSITIVITY?
