Responsible control
The amount of control over the content of all architectural instruments of service during the preparation that is ordinarily exercised by architects applying the professional standard of care
Can architects stamp and sign documents that were not produced under their responsible control?
No.
That said, responsible control does not mean that architectural services need to be produced in the architect’s office by the architect themselves. As long as the architect is maintaining responsible control, drawings can be produced by others or even in another part of the world.
Punishment for practicing without a license or inappropriately selling oneself as an architect?
Misdemeanor;
$100 to $5000 fine; and/or
Up to 1 year in county jail
Does an architect need to stamp drawings that doesn’t require a licensed architect to design?
Yes. Architects must sign and stamp even those types of structures that unlicensed architects are allowed to design

Qualifications of an applicant for an architectural license include (3):
- Not having committed acts or crimes constituting grounds for denial
- Demonstration of knowledge of interior and exterior barrier free design
- 8 years or equivalent of education/experience/training (professional degree from an approved architectural school shall equal 5 years of training)
Types of projects that do not require a license (4)
- Single family detached dwellings of wood frame construction no more than 2 stories high plus basement
- Multiple dwelling units (up to 4 units) of wood frame construction no more than 2 stories high plus basement
- Garages or similar structure of wood frame construction no more than 2 stories high plus basement
- Agricultural or ranch building of wood frame construction, unless local building officials deem it an undue risk to public health, safety, or welfare
